interests and knowledge of the group will usually guide
the discussions.
Room 319—Bible Encounters conducts an exploration of

to acquire deeper insights and make stronger commitments
to Christ and to each other. Group interaction, prayer,
and fellowship are key elements of this class.

interactive class devoted to building and encouraging
strong Christian families. A time of sharing
experiences and learning together occurs each week.
Library—The Seekers offers a relaxed time of
fellowship, coffee, and lively Bible discussions.
Parents of teens and those new to the church are
especially encouraged to attend.
Conference Rm.—Choir Class is offered to meet the
time constraints of those performing in the 10:45 AM
service but is open to all.
FIRST
NIGHTERS
Most of the year finds this informal group
meeting on the first Sunday of the month at a private
home or in the Colonial Room for a time of fellowship,
good food, and some type of entertaining or informative
program. Everyone in the extended church family is
invited to participate. If convenient, attendees are
asked to bring a favorite entrée to share with the
group. Sometimes a theme is suggested for the meal,
especially when fitting with the season. For more
information and location of the next event consult the
church bulletin or contact Jerry or Peg Wysong. Come to share good food and Christian
fellowship for a spiritual uplift.
SMALL
GROUP MINISTRIES
A small
group serves three main purposes: provides an entry
point for the non-member; establishes a new or old
member as a part of the whole giving each person a sense
of belonging; promotes growth in each member and
prepares the way for further growth. Short-term
study groups are set to run for winter and spring
sessions each year. Each group determines the time and
place for meeting. For more information on this
vital ministry please contact the church office or call
Glen Burns.
TUESDAY
LUNCH BIBLE STUDY
At noon on
each Tuesday, Rev. Heinsohn leads Bible study in the
Heritage Room. Participants are encouraged to bring a
Bible and sack lunch. Those joining the group on a
lunch break are encouraged to arrive when possible and
leave when necessary. For more information on this
break from the normal workday, contact the church office
and ask for Rev. Heinsohn.
YOUNG-AT-HEART
Ready for a casual night out? Come join
this group of usually 30 to 40 year olds for great
conversation and just plain fun! Young at Heart
meet about every other month. Invitations to events are
distributed at church or mailed. Check the Sunday
bulletin for announcements concerning upcoming events.
Anyone is welcomed to participate. Just notify the
contact person of your desire to participate. Past
get-togethers have included dinner and bowling, a Geneva
Hills workday (children included), chili cook-off and
campfire, game nights, progressive dinners, a cabin
party, and much, much more. This group has also
collectively adopted a needy family as their mission
project. For more information contact Tiffany
Culver or call the church office.

MINISTRIES
This

junior and senior high-aged students within the
Lancaster area. Opportunities are provided for them to
find God in a real and personal way. They are
encouraged to grow into spiritual maturity.
The junior high program is for all students
in the 7th through 9th grade and
meets on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:15 PM. Senior high
students in grades 10 through 12 meet on Sundays from
6:00 to 7:45 PM. All meetings are held at the Wright
Place located adjacent to the church parking lot.
Both age groups mix fun with worship,
discussion and study that fosters a deeper relationship
with God. Opportunities are offered throughout the year
for service projects, mission trips, retreats, and
Christian concerts.
Praise Band is open to all students in these
age groups who wish to share and minister with their
musical abilities. Rehearsals are held on Sundays 4:30

For more information call the church office
and ask to speak to the Director of Youth Ministries.
SUNDAY
SCHOOL FOR JR. AND SR. HIGH YOUTH
Sunday school activities for this group are
designed to help students grown intellectually in their
faith. An emphasis is placed on the Scriptures as an
aid for a solid theological understanding of the
importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ.
A combined junior/senior high class is
offered each Sunday at the Wright Place adjacent to the
church parking lot. The topics chosen for study are
planned to encourage students to apply Biblical
teachings to their lives and will change every few
weeks. Every other year a Confirmation class is offered
for those desiring to make a public profession their
faith and become a full member of the First Presbyterian
Church. For more information on participating or
to learn more details, contact the church office and ask
for the Director of Youth Ministries.
WOMEN'S
MINISTRIES
KNIT
TOGETHER WOMEN’S CIRCLE
Knit Together is a Presbyterian Women's Circle that
combines both knitting (or crocheting) and prayer.
Participants create shawls and other projects to
minister to those who are grieving, lonely or sick as
well as others who might be celebrating special events
in their lives. While the group knits (or crochets)
projects for specific persons they weave into them
prayers given during the time together. Prayer knitting
is the place where these two worlds meet to begin
knitting wholeness into a fractured world.
Knit Together meets on the first and third
Mondays of each month at 7:00 PM in the church library.
Come join them and find out more about this circle of
knitters. This ministry has no boundaries. One may knit
or crochet as a novice or an accomplished knitter, and
no one is too young or too old to learn how to knit.
For more information about this ministry, contact the
church office or call leader Martha Pool.
LOYALTY CIRCLE
Loyalty
Circle is a fellowship of caring women who meet
regularly for prayer, Bible study, and mission work as
part of Presbyterian Women. New members are always
welcome. Monthly meetings are held September through
June on the third Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Meetings are
usually held in Room 324, a member’s home or
occasionally at an area restaurant.
The group also is active with missions.
They have an ongoing pledge to Presbytery, Synod, and
Global missions, support the Buckhorn Children’s Center
of Ohio, Presbyterian Women Mission Opportunities at the
Presbytery level, and the Fellowship of the Least Coin,
along with others.
For more information on joining this group,
contact Gerry McDonald or Barbara Darnell.
WOMEN AT
THE WELL BIBLE STUDY
Several years ago, a few women wishing to
know God more intimately, as well as each other,
gathered together for a weekly Bible study. Thus began
this long-time ministry at First Presbyterian Church.
The materials used have ranged from studies
on the Scriptures to other books and learning
materials. However, all studies are firmly rooted in
the teachings of Christ and God’s message to us.
The group is multi-generational and has
ranged in size from six to more than 30 members. The
study is always structured so that members do not need
to be present at each session to feel an integral part
of the group.
This Bible study meets from noon to 1:00 PM
every Thursday in the church library. Everyone,
including women on their lunch break, is invited to
bring lunch and join the group. For more information
contact the church office, Mary Ann Boone or
Peg Wysong.
WOMEN’S
BOOK CLUB
This group meets monthly to have stimulating
discussions about books of the members’ choosing.
Selections cover a wide and varied range of interests
based on input from those attending.
The Club
meets on the second Sunday of each month at 7:00 PM in
the church library and is open to new members for any
one month if a particular selection is of interest to
the individual. Membership is also open to the public.
Monthly facilitators rotate within the group.
Three facilitators head the group. Please
contact them for current information and book
selection. Direct your questions to: Muriel Ballou, Ann Kitzmiller, or Judy Beal.
WOMEN’S
MINISTRY TEAM
The Women’s Ministry Team meets on the third
Tuesday of each month in the church library at 7:00 PM.
If you are interested in serving on this team, we
welcome new members.
The Women’s Ministry Team exists to foster
ministry by, for, and to women, and to make it visible
and accessible to every woman who enters our church.
The desire is to encourage authentic relationships and
an atmosphere in which women feel safe to be themselves
with Christ as our model.
The Team’s goal is to provide Bible study groups and
activities for women that offer opportunities for
spiritual growth and enrichment, leadership, mission
outreach, and fellowship. For more information, contact
Martha Pool or call the church office.
YOUNG
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Young women of the church gather on the
second and fourth Thursdays of each month in the church
library from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. God planned ahead for all
your gloomy days. In fact, God has arranged for
encouragement to be right there, waiting for you to
discover it. You only need to know where to look!
Words of encouragement can always be found
in the Bible, but God gave each of us the ability to
console and encourage, as well. God is always with us,
and we’re all in this thing together. So,
let’s encourage one another along the way! For more
information on this study group contact the church
office or group facilitator Kim Johnson.
MEN’S MINISTRIES
THE
DO-NOTHING SOCIETY
This social group is aimed at the retired
men of the congregation. The group also welcomes men
from the community and will tolerate attendance by
someone who still maintains employment.
Since no
organization exists, meetings are not held but
encounters happen regularly once a month at a designated
location that may change. Time and location are
announced in the church bulletin or by postcard.
Meetings always involve eating and fun. For more
information on this group, call the church office for a
contact person or show up at a meeting.
MEN’S
BREAKFAST FELLOWSHIP
This small men’s group is presently meeting
every other Friday at 7:30 AM at Trader’s Café. A
discussion leader guides the men through a chosen
Christian book pertaining to a current interest of the
group.
The fellowship functions as an open
discussion group and participants are encouraged to
share their views and experiences. These exchanges are
always lively and thought provoking.
An invitation is extended to any man in the
congregation who would like a sharpened spiritual
outlook and a deepened spiritual understanding of who a
Man of Christ should be in this 21st century.
For more information on this group, check
a current church bulletin, call the church office, or
contact Howard Rea.
MEN’S
SATURDAY MORNING BREAKFAST
Each second Saturday of the month finds the
men of First Presbyterian Church meeting in the Colonial
Room to enjoy friends and fellowship and special
features while casually eating a delicious breakfast.
Activities at this event vary from Bible
study to guest speakers. Each meeting is organized as a
stand-alone activity and all interested men are
encouraged to attend as many of the meetings as
possible. A strong emphasis is placed on establishing
and maintaining fellowship among men of the church with
a special desire of promoting multi-generational and new
friendships.
For more information on this special group
activity contact the church office or call Glen Burns.
MINISTRIES AND
MISSION FOR FPC
CHURCH
OFFICE ASSISTANCE
This ministry provides for many of the items
that support the weekly services and goals of the church
but that are often not considered. While the office
staff does an outstanding job in this area, they
appreciate assistance in completing this necessary work.
Bulletin collating is scheduled each Friday
afternoon for about an hour. Volunteers may sign up for
one week or more each month. Newsletter collating
occurs one Thursday morning each month for two hours.
At certain times, assistance is needed with
phone answering. This is arranged on an as-needed
basis. Posters, library operation, bulletin boards, and
photographing church events are also areas needing
help. For more information or to sign up for this
ministry, contact Sandy at the church office.
COFFEE
HOUR
Every Sunday following both the 8:15 AM
and 10:45 AM worship services, the congregation is
invited to the Heritage Room (across from the bookstore)
to enjoy a time of fellowship.
At this time a pot of coffee, punch and some
sweet or finger food is available for everyone
attending. This special time is an important part of
the ministry of First Presbyterian Church as it is often
the only time during a particular week that a member
visits with others in the congregation.
The coffee hour is open to everyone
attending. Please consider taking a break from your
busy schedule and get to know your church family in a
more personal way.
Hosts volunteer to be placed on a monthly
rotation. You may also volunteer to be a substitute.
Preparation of a light dessert and punch is all that is
needed. If you would like to become a host of this
weekly event call the church office and ask for Lee
Jewett.
FINANCIAL AID FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
The First
Presbyterian Church offers several opportunities to
assist with financing higher education. Through the
generosity of church members, scholarship and
educational loan funds have been established for
deserving applicants.
With the rising costs of college tuition and
related expenses, every source of financial aid should
be investigated. Many federal and state financial aid
programs do not cover the hidden costs of higher
education. Room and board, books, supplies, and travel
expenses are frequently not budgeted by the family when
planning for college expenses. The tuition bill sent
from the college is an obvious direct expense. However,
other scholarship and aid resources best meet these
additional expenses. For more information on
how to apply for these funds or to establish a
scholarship or educational loan fund, contact the church
office and ask for Jodie Phayer for more information.
FUNERAL
DINNERS
As a
service to those church families who have suffered the
loss of a loved one and desire to gather as a group, the
church offers its facilities.
When requested, the church family will
coordinate serving a meal before or after the funeral
service. Menu suggestions are available but the team
will try to accommodate the family at this time of
grief.
Volunteers are always needed to coordinate,
plan meals, shop, cook, serve, or cleanup for these
meals. Those willing to bake a dessert at their homes
are also encouraged to sign up. To find out more
details or to add your name to the list of available
volunteers, contact the church office or Molly Hampshire.
GROUNDSKEEPER
The church does not have a very large lawn
but it is an important part of the overall public
presentation of the church property. It offers a first
impression of the church to the Lancaster community.
An assignment is given on a rotational basis
with four individuals or teams each taking a week of
responsibility in the months of April through October.
Mowing, trimming, and cleaning the exterior areas of the
church property usually take an hour once every four
weeks. New volunteers are always welcomed to join in
this important ministry. For more information or to
sign up, contact the church office.
GROWTH AND OUTREACH TEAM
This team is concerned with membership
development and was formed with the main focus on growth
and nurture of the congregation.
An important aspect of this team’s
activities has been the “Bread Visit” conducted by a
member of the team. Visitors who attend First
Presbyterian Church receive a personal visit from a
member of the team and a gift of fresh-baked bread along
with information on the church and an inspirational poem
explaining the symbolic significance of the bread.
The Team also works to assimilate new
members into the life of our church, as well as offering
encouragement to our current membership. The Team also
sponsors New Member classes, a reception activity
involving new members, the Session, and the Team. This
group oversees the guest table, website development,
local advertising, and coordinates other social mixers.
For more information on this exciting ministry team,
contact the church office or Reverend Heinsohn.
HEALTH
MINISTRY
A team of caring individuals makes up this
team. Blood pressure screenings are offered after each
worship service twice each month and monthly bulletin
boards cover a variety of health-related issues.
A service on Wholeness and Healing is held
during each quarter of the year at a special time on
Sunday afternoon. The Team also sponsors a
Congregational Health Needs Assessment to assure that
the plans of the Team meet the health needs and concerns
of the congregation. Services of the Team are aimed at
First Presbyterian Church but are open and available to
the Lancaster and Fairfield County community. For more
information on this vital ministry contact the church
office or Judy Snider.
MEDIA
MINISTRY
Every Sunday morning the church service is
recorded on both video and audio tapes, duplicated, and
then distributed to members and friends of the
congregation who are unable to attend church. This
helps some of our members with limited mobility to stay
connected to the rest of the congregation by means of
the Sunday tapes that are delivered to them weekly.
The friendly visit that occurs when the tape
is dropped off is rewarding to the recipient as well as
the deliverer. It also allows for a quick assessment of
other needs that the church might be able to meet.
A rotating schedule of volunteers is
responsible for videotaping the weekly services. If you
enjoy working with technology more than visiting this
might be of interest. Additional volunteers are always
welcomed. Help is needed on a rotating monthly schedule
or as a substitute.
For more information on how you might help
with this important outreach to our homebound members,
please contact the church office.
SAMARITAN FUND
This
special fund was established as an emergency backup for
members of the congregation. Occasionally, a member or
family finds a pressing financial need threatening.
This fund is to be used for those times when other
resources have been expended or are not available in a
timely manner.
Distribution of funds is made in a discreet fashion.
Needs should be identified and reported to the pastor,
elders, deacons or a staff member. A timely assessment
of need will be made and funds distributed as available.
Repayment is not a requirement but is encouraged when
possible. This fund is open for donations at any time.
Please contact the church office if you wish to donate
or to be placed on a “contact if needed” list.
Anonymous donations may be made addressed to Jodie
Phayer at the church office.
THANK GOD
IT’S WEDNESDAY
The TGIW program runs weekly between
September and April and is held in the church dining
room. It offers the church a time of food, fellowship,
worship, and study. It serves as a time for midweek
revival and an opportunity to learn about and experience
Jesus Christ in our lives.
A buffet-style dinner is served between 5:30
and 6:15 PM. A reasonably priced ala carte menu is
offered including a featured entrée, salad bar, pizza,
soup, rolls, homemade desserts, and beverages.
Devotions and announcements are then given and a program
for adults is held from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the Heritage
Room. Programs often include a guest speaker or special
music. Childcare is available from 6:30 to 9:00 PM in
the church nursery located on the main floor. For more
information on programs or how to get involved, contact
the church office.
THANK GOD
IT’S WEDNESDAY COOKS AND CREWS
Four cooks and crews oversee this mid-week
program, each taking one- week in rotation. Each crew
is composed of four components: head cook, table
setters, cooking assistants, and servers, cashier and
cleanup. The head cook plans the meal, shops for the
necessary food items, and oversees the meal preparation.
An opportunity always exists for volunteers
for this program in order to let more people enjoy the
different ministry opportunities available at this
activity. For more information or to sign up for a crew
assignment, contact the church office.
TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY
The Transportation Ministry Team takes the
opportunity to serve the needs of an important segment
of our congregation. Transportation is provided to
worship and other activities as requested by members who
cannot drive. Arrangements may also be made to
transport these special people to other appointments and
activities if requested. Many of the people served by
this ministry are longtime members of the congregation
who have given much to the church family. This is an
excellent opportunity to give something to them and in
turn receive the special blessing of spending time who
these wonderful people.
Team members are usually assigned one Sunday
each month. This ministry is an outreach of the Board
of Deacons. For more information on this unique
ministry and how it works, contact the church office or
Ed Pool.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
SUNDAY
SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN
FAITH VILLAGE is the rotational
Sunday School program for grades one through six. Major
Bible stories and concepts are taught through
kid-friendly, multi-media workshops for 4-5 weeks
rotating the children to a different workshop each week
with the same story taught by means of art, drama,
music, games, audio-visuals, puppets, storytelling, and
other educational media.
Volunteer leaders for this program are a
variety of church members. The rotational model
concentrates on the major stories of the Bible over and
over again. This appeals to the youths’ love of
repetition and helps them develop a memory and
understanding of the content.
For more information on this exciting
program, contact the church office and ask for the
Director of Children’s Ministries.
SUNDAY
SCHOOL FOR JR. AND SR. HIGH YOUTH
Sunday school activities for this group are

importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ.
A combined junior/senior high class is
offered each Sunday at the Wright Place adjacent to the
church parking lot. The topics chosen for study are
planned to encourage students to apply Biblical
teachings to their lives and will change every few
weeks. Every other year a Confirmation class is offered
for those desiring to make a public profession their
faith and become a full member of the First Presbyterian
Church.

MUSIC
MINISTRIES
FIRST
SERVICE CHOIR
The first
worship service at 8:15 AM is characterized as a quiet,
more traditional Presbyterian service, using familiar
hymns and liturgies. The First Service Choir is a
faithful ensemble whose repertoire includes selections
of contemporary choral music, folk anthems, praise and
gospel choruses as well as traditional choral
literature. this choir rehearses in the choir room on
Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 and meets on Sunday

friendly’ with greater congregational participation in
music and liturgy.

contributes a broad spectrum of musical styles in
keeping with the particular season, scripture, and
sermon theme of the day or other facet of worship. This
choir rehearses in the sanctuary on Wednesday evenings
from 7:30 to 9:00, and meets on Sunday mornings at 10:10
for a short pre-service rehearsal. For more

CELEBRATION RINGERS
Celebration Ringers, one of Fairfield County’s finest
bell choirs, was founded a quarter of a century ago and
is the longest continuously functioning group in the
church. This group plays for both worship services and
has a history of playing for various community events
and with other groups. The ringers rehearse in the
Belfry on Thursday evenings, 5:30 to 7:00. Additional
rehearsals are scheduled as needed. Since membership in
this group is usually closed, please call the church
office and ask for Leta Cook for present status. There
are always openings for substitutes who read music and
have previous ringing experience.
FIRST
BRASS CHOIR AND QUARTET
First
Brass Choir and First Brass Quartet are made up of brass
players from First Presbyterian. First Brass is a core
quartet that prepares hymn accompaniments for
congregational singing. Occasionally pieces are
performed with organ and/or hand bells. First Brass
Choir is open to all brass players in the church H.S.
through adult who can commit to the scheduled
rehearsals. This group assembles one or two times each
year to play for worship. Rehearsals take place on
Sunday afternoons and are scheduled as needed.
For more information on this
well-received ministry, contact the church office and
ask for Leta Cook.
LOCAL AND
GLOBAL OUTREACH
MISSION
TEAM COMMITTEE
The intent of our mission commitment at
First Presbyterian Church is to attain a balance in
giving to missions by geography (local, regional,
national, and global) and by purpose (evangelical,
educational, and humanitarian).
Each year a tithe or greater amount is
budgeted to assist a score or more churches, agencies,
and other entities, all of which are rigorously examined
by the Lay Mission Team. Local mission dollars support
the Maywood Mission, Information and Referral Services,
Christian broadcasting, Habitat for Humanity and
others. Regional and national programs include
Presbytery support, inner-city outreach and homes for
troubled youth. International efforts include mission
trips to foreign countries. Many of the church youth
and adults regularly participate in these opportunities
to minister to the world’s needy. For more information
contact the church office.
BOY
SCOUT TROOP 5
Boys from
the summer before sixth grade up to age eighteen are
invited to join with Troop 5. The troop is open to boys
from any school or school system.
Activities include lots of fun
and outdoor experiences while learning valuable skills
and earning badges. Troop 5 usually schedules one
outdoor activity each month, often including camping.
Activities may include backpacking, canoeing, caving,
swimming, archery, whitewater rafting and rappelling.
Meetings are held on Monday evenings
from 7:30 – 8:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church. An
annual registration fee of $10 and monthly dues of $2
are collected. Outings cost from $5 to $30 depending on
the activities involved. Summer camp with the troop is
also available and costs about $150. For further
information contact Scoutmaster Phil Anderson.
CHRISTMAS
BASKETS
Following Thanksgiving each year the
congregation is given twelve families in need of help at
Christmas time. Fairfield County Community Action
provides the names after researching the needs of the
Fairfield County area.
Food is purchased for these families from
the church mission fund but the congregation is given a
list of Christmas gifts needed by each family to
complete their holiday lists. Families or individuals
sign up for a particular family and then shop for and
gift-wrap their purchases. All food and gifts are
distributed by volunteers from the congregation
following the 10:45 worship service the week before
Christmas. Help is needed for grocery shopping,
providing gifts, and delivery. For more information on
this ministry, contact the church office, Nancy Goodman
or David Landefeld.
DISCIPLESHIP HOUSE BOOKSTORE
The bookstore is a ministry to the members
of First Presbyterian as well as an outreach to the
Lancaster and Fairfield County community. Conveniently
located on the middle level of the church near the
sanctuary, it is well stocked with a variety of Bibles,
study materials, books on prayer and Christian living.
Books and DVD’s for children are also available. Much
of the bookstore business is in the form of special
orders. Books, special Bibles, CD’s and DVD’s may be
ordered with most arriving within three days. Seasonal
materials associated with Christmas, Easter, Graduation,
Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day are stocked or available
by special order.
The bookstore is open Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Sunday morning
after each worship service. For additional information
or to arrange a special order, contact the church office
or drop by during regular business hours.
FOUNDATION
DINNERS
Foundation Dinners is founded on the Gospel
of Christ. It serves the needy of the community and
gives opportunity to privileged people who care to
express their concern in a meaningful way.
Every day, every year, since January 1,
1994, the Foundation Dinners has served a meal to those
in need. Devotions and prayer are a part of each meal.
They are an agency of the United Way of Fairfield
County.
On the 29th of each month, at
least five persons are needed from the church to
prepare, serve and clean up.
For more information on how you might become
involved in this community outreach, contact the church
office or call Ruth Goeller.
If you wish to become involved in this
ministry in a direct way, contact their office at 1000
West Fifth Avenue or call 653-3233 and learn of other
mission opportunities.
FRIEND-TO-FRIEND VISITATION MINISTRY
This ministry has been a strong component of
the church for over twenty years. Serving on
Friend-to-Friend is an extremely rewarding experience.
A friendly call from a church member to
another who is limited and often homebound is an
extremely welcome event. These monthly visits always
lifts the spirits of both parties. Many wonderful and
lasting friendships are made as friends share their
faith and love for our church. Members are always eager
to hear about the activities of the church and how those
events are affecting the life of the church.
The Friend-to-Friend Visitation Ministry
also teaches participants to appreciate aging positively
and gracefully. It is a program filled with unexpected
blessings for all involved and is a truly special
ministry. For more information on how you might
participate, contact Gigi Elliott or call
the church office.
HABITAT
FOR HUMANITY
Fairfield County Habitat for Humanity is
affiliated with the Habitat for Humanity International,
a nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that
builds affordable homes for those in need, sold
interest-free and at no profit. Volunteers are always
needed for construction, committees, and various
projects. This is a great way to get involved with your
community and help make a substantial difference in the
lives of others.
Help is needed on several committees and to
work in the office in addition to work at construction
sites. You can help eliminate substandard housing in
our community. Cash donations as well as donated time
are always appreciated.
To find out more, you may contact the
Habitat for Humanity office at 654-3434 between 10:00 AM
and 3:00 PM weekdays or call Jim or Marsha Russell.
HEIFER
INTERNATIONAL
Today, milk, eggs and fresh vegetables
will nourish millions of people who were once hungry.
Families who for generations knew only poverty will be
building new homes and starting businesses. Children
who once headed out to the fields to do backbreaking
work will be heading into schoolrooms to learn to read.
And people who never thought they’d be in a position to
help someone else will be experiencing the joy of
charitable giving. How is this possible? With Heifer’s
proven approach – almost 60 years in the making – to
helping people obtain a sustainable source of food and
income. Heifer continues in its efforts to end world
hunger and care for the earth, emphasizing community
involvement that distinguishes its work from most global
relief organizations. Recipients agree to share the
offspring of gift animals with others in need, making
them equal partners with Heifer in the fight to
end world hunger. Each year half of the children’s
offering along with proceeds from the sale of Heifer
Project Christmas ornaments is sent to this mission. For
more information on this mission to the world contact
the church office and ask for the Director of Children’s
Ministry.
NUEVO
PARAISO, HONDURAS
Beginning in 1998 First Presbyterian has
sent work teams to the village of Nuevo Paraiso during
the summer. The predominant residents are women and
children. Food, medical/dental care, clothing, books,
school supplies, love and spiritual support are among
the many things included in this outreach ministry.
Each year the work teams are assigned specific projects
to complete during their stay.
Team members also minister to nearly 250
elementary children by teaching arts and crafts, music
and physical education classes. A library at the school
has also been established through the efforts of First
Presbyterian Church. Nearby Montana de Luz has also
been a recipient of this ministry. This village was
established to meet the special needs of women and
children who are HIV positive.
For more information on how you might help or sign up
for the next mission trip contact the church office or
project coordinator, Sandy Boylan.
PRISON
MINISTRY
The Southeastern Ohio Correctional Institute
has many needs that may be met by the local community.
First Presbyterian Church is involved with meeting the
special needs of this prison community, especially those
being presented by the prison chaplain. Education is
sponsored with personal grants to prisoners for college
tuition by way of distance learning and independent
study. Special educational needs are also supported as
needed. Church and community leaders also carry out a
program of special speakers.
A used book and magazine collection is
ongoing. Donations are accepted at all times in the box
located in the narthex. As a part of this ministry, a
book club meets as needed to discuss books of common
interest. Most recently the inmates have started a
sweater ministry, producing knitted sweaters for
distribution to needy persons. Yarn donations are
accepted at the church office.
For more information on how you might help
in this ministry, contact the church office or Jayne
Brook.
SAMARITAN’S PURSE SHOEBOX PROJECT
Samaritan’s Purse is an international
ministry headed by Franklin Graham. Citizens and
organizations in ten countries participate in this
outreach to the needy children in over 90 countries
worldwide.
Each fall First Presbyterian Church members
respond to this ministry by preparing a castoff shoebox
as a container and then lovingly and prayerfully filling
the box to capacity with a variety of personal and
hygienic care items along with an age appropriate toy
and perhaps a personal message and some candy.
Guidelines for the shoebox contents are given to all
participating. After the shoeboxes are collected and
dedicated during a morning worship service, they are
delivered to a transfer site for shipment to Boone,
North Carolina.
Each year a mission team of interested
church members travels to Boone to help with the work
needed to prepare these gifts for shipment around the
world.
For more information contact the church
office and ask for Cathy Schmidt or Vickie Widener.
VENTURE
CREW FIVE
Venture Crew Five was started in 2002 as an
outreach ministry of the First Presbyterian Church in
conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America.
Venturing is a program for male and female
youth ages 14-20. Crew Five is made up of youth from
the church but is also open to all youth in Lancaster
and Fairfield County. Venturing provides leadership
opportunities to the youth involved, as well as awards.
Many adventuring crews select a specialization. Crew
Five has chosen a general high adventure focus.
Activities include rock climbing, camping, shooting
sports, backpacking, King’s Island, and attending
professional sporting events. Future events planned
include whitewater rafting, canoeing, rappelling and
bicycling.
For more information on this exciting
outreach ministry, contact the church office or Shawn
and Melissa Ford.
SPECIAL
ACTIVITIES
CELEBRATION OF OUR GIFTS
In collaboration with the Lancaster Festival
Art Walk, First Presbyterian Church organized an
all-congregational art display. Works from many
artists, singers, and musicians make the church a
destination for the hundreds attending the Festival.
A special display of the church youth
artwork is also displayed in the educational wing. All
mediums of art are welcomed for display. The event is
opened to the public during the Art Walk but also is
available for the congregation to view the following
Sunday. Special liturgical banners created by church
members are found decorating the public areas of the
church during the event to promote the gospel of Jesus
Christ and First Presbyterian Church’s purpose for
being.
A ministry of “cookie bakers” is also
appreciated by all attending this event, allowing yet
another area of the arts to be experienced.
Contact the church office for more information.
DECK
THE HALLS
An Advent tradition at First Presbyterian
Church has been the gathering of interested persons to
decorate the many areas of the church for the Christmas
season. This is scheduled as part of the TGIW
activities on the Wednesday following Thanksgiving.
This short-term commitment may be an activity for one
year or become a personal tradition. Individuals or
families enjoy this time to meet with other church
members and make working at this task a time of fun and
spiritual awakening. New
participants are always welcomed. For more information
call Alison Murphy.
KIRKIN’ O’
THE TARTANS
This special service has its roots in the 18th
century when British Parliament passed an Act banning
the kilt and every other tartan garment in an effort to
destroy Highland Clan identity. Not easily deterred,
the defiant Scots secretly carried remnants of their
tartans to church. The minister would then add a
blessing into the service for the tartans and the clans
they represented.
In recognition of this historical event and
to encourage all members to become aware of any personal
Scottish heritage, a special service is conducted every
other year. On the designated Sunday the sanctuary is
filled with banners displaying the tartans of the Scots
as they are marched in and set on prominent display
before the congregation. Many tartans are already
identified but many more lack representation. To
sponsor a tartan or participate in this special service,
contact the church office.
PRESBYTERIAN PLAYERS
This ministry is an inter-generational
drama group that performs both secular and spiritual
plays with the purpose of offering opportunities for
people to work together while having fun. Also, it
fills a need for those who enjoy expressing themselves
through drama. The group’s repertoire includes a
1940’s patriotic musical, a Disney Spectacular, a 1930’s
circus musical, two melodramas, medieval banquets,
“Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans” productions, Café du Poeme (a
“Poetry Alive” production), a contemporary Christian
cantata, “God with Us,” and various dramatic vignettes
to enhance worship.
Anyone interested in joining this growing
ministry is welcomed for one production or more.
Portions of all ticket sales are designated for mission
outreach.
For more information, contact the church
office or call Jennie Heinsohn.
