Scripture is the one authoritative for determining our system of beliefs. It stands as the unique witness to Jesus Christ. Scripture is where Presbyterians look to learn of God, focus our thoughts and shape our beliefs. Presbyterians are further assisted in the interpretation of the Scriptures by the Book of Confessions that includes confessional statements made over the several centuries of the Church. These confessions establish the basis for our belief as Presbyterians.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster gives witness to the faith of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We believe that God created the world; that God made covenants with the people of God; and, that God intervenes in the world through the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Presbyterians believe that God is separate and above the creation while also relating to the creation in personal ways.

God is a personal God who speaks, listens and responds to us. We believe that Jesus, the embodiment of the eternal Word of God, proclaimed the Father, taught by his words and actions, healed the sick, died for all sins of the world and rose from death and ascended to heaven to sit on the right hand of God the Father. We believe in the Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures, empowers the Church for its work and comforts and guides the individual believer. We further believe that we will live with God forever. We are Christians.
